These aren’t your parent’s braces!

Metal braces are still the most common orthodontic treatment. Today’s metal braces are sleeker, more comfortable, and more efficient than ever before.

  • Metal braces consist of brackets that are bonded directly to the teeth.
  • Archwires connect the brackets and place the pressure needed to move teeth.
  • Ligature ties are the tiny colorful elastics that hold the archwire in place on the brackets.

Because braces are made of metal, they are incredibly strong and very efficient in guiding teeth to new, healthier positions. We know not everyone loves the idea of metal braces, so we’re proud to also offer ceramic and gold braces.

Ceramic braces work just like metal braces, but instead of being made of metal, the brackets are made of tooth-colored ceramic. This helps them blend in with the natural smile so that your treatment isn’t as noticeable.

Getting your braces on is fairly simple. After your teeth are cleaned, polished, and dried, the brackets are adhered using a special bonding material. The archwire is placed in the brackets and the ligature ties hold the wire in place. The ligature ties can be customized with your favorite colors to make your treatment unique.

There will be some necessary adjustments to your daily life while you’re in braces. You may notice a bit of pressure in the first few days after your braces are placed. We recommend sticking to soft foods while your mouth is adjusting. You can take over-the-counter pain medication to help. Warm salt water rinses are a great trick to help, too.

Your brackets and wires are strong, but you will still need to take care not to damage them. You’ll need to avoid eating foods that are too hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy as these could bend your wires or pull a bracket loose. Also avoid foods you have to bite directly into, such as apples and corn on the cob. Cut these foods into smaller bites so you can still enjoy them.

Once your braces are removed, you’ll need to wear a retainer to ensure your teeth stay in their new locations.
