Dr. Feinstein recommends that all orthodontic patients wear a protective mouthguard while playing contact sports in order to minimize the chances of a sports-related injury to their teeth.
What is a mouthguard?
A mouthguard is an appliance that is designed to fit over the teeth and braces to provide protective cushioning. It should fit snugly over the teeth to provide the most protection. Custom mouthguards can also help prevent head injuries.
What types of mouthguards are available?
Choosing the correct mouthguard for you is very important. There are three basic types of mouthguards available:
Pre-made or stock mouthguards
We carry Shock Doctor mouthguards. These are specifically made for athletes with braces to protect the braces, as well as the teeth, lips, and cheeks from injury. Made of 100% medical-grade silicone, Shock Doctor mouthguards are designed to adapt to changes in tooth position as your treatment progresses.
Custom-made mouthguards
We also offer custom-made mouthguards that are designed to provide excellent protection against injury. Our mouthguards provide the best protection because they are designed specifically for your mouth. And you can personalize your mouthguard to just about any color! Custom mouthguards are also the most effective option for head injury protection.
“Boil-and-bite” fitted mouthguards
We do not recommend this type of mouthguard for patients who are in braces. These are a great option once treatment has finished, but not while you are in treatment because they will not allow your teeth to move to their new positions.
Caring for your mouthguard
It is important to take proper care of your mouthguard, just like you do your Invisalign aligners or retainer. Keep it clean and store it in a protective case when you aren’t using it. Replace your mouthguard every season or as soon as you notice any damage or wear.
